Tuam Active Retirement Association (T.A.R.A.) was set in 2000. It is a national organisation founded in 1978. With a network of associations around the country it has a membership of almost 22,000. It is affiliated to the Senior Citizens Parliament, an umbrella organisation, with a membership in excess of 100,000, representing the elderly. Each association has voting rights at the Senior Citizens Parliament A.G.M. Motions are submitted at this meeting, generally for the improvement of conditions of the elderly, and if approved are submitted to Government for consideration in the following Budget.

Membership is open to retired people over 55 years of age. The Active Retired Movement’s aim is to help older people lead a full, happy and healthy retirement by offering organized opportunities for a wide range of activities; holidays; outings and socials; creative and learning programmes; indoor and outdoor sports and community work. It aims to maintain the dignity, independence and a sense of purpose of retired people.

Tuam branch caters a wide range of activities; computer training; art classes; set dancing; yoga, crafts bowling and any other activities that there is a demand for. The bowling teams compete in competitions with other groups in the county. There are day trips; outings to the theatre; holidays at home and in England. Qualified people are invited to speak on topics effecting elderly people at our meetings. The organization also produces its own magazine.

Weekly meetings are held in Parish Centre, Dublin Rd., Tuam. (beside traffic lights at school)
