THE BALLYTRASNA / GARDENFIELD GOLDEN MILE

The residents of Ballytrasna/Gardenfield are in possession of one of the most beautiful miles’ in the whole County. The village is located just 2 miles north of Tuam, just off the main N17 road and visitors are always welcome to stroll along our mile. Here you will find many places of interest including ringforts, the famous “Lally’s monument”, a natural bird sanctuary, a mass path, a lost village, the Holy Year Cross, an old village pump, many groves of trees that came from the 4 corners of the globe, a large Turlough, two National Schools (old & new) and much more.

We entered the mile into The Golden Mile of Galway 2005 competition and won “The best community effort”/Tony Dervan RIP Award.
The Golden Mile of Galway  is a heritage and environmental initiative designed to encourage people living on rural roads- in particular tertiary roads to become more aware of the natural and built heritage along their roadsides and where necessary, to take appropriate action to manage this valuable resource.

The Golden Mile of Galway is organised by Galway County Council, Galway Rural Development, Meitheal Forbarta na Gaeltachta Teo, Comhdhail Oileáin na hEireann and Galway County Heritage Forum with the support of the farming organisations.

The Golden Mile initiative is the rural equivalent of the Tidy Towns competition that has been going from strength to strength since 1958. The project is supportive of the tourism industry and it assists in creating an awareness and understanding of our traditional rural roadscapes.

We are already looking forward to the 2006 Golden Mile of Galway whereby we plan on building on our success in 2005, at our first attempt.
