Who is
counselling and psychotherapy for?
Counselling and psychotherapy is for anyone who needs help from
someone other than family or friends.
People have many different reasons for seeking therapy these
reasons may include:
Having a deep sense of worthlessness.
Having difficulty in relating to others at home or at work.
A sense of being stuck in ones life.
Suffering from anxiety, panic attacks, obsessive compulsions
or eating disorders.
Experienced trauma in the past, for example abuse, sexual,
physical or verbal.
Relationship breakdown or bereavement.
Physical problems that have no medical reason and are
emotionally related e.g. headaches or back problems.
Feeling depressed or suicidal.
Wanting more self awareness.
What
happens in the therapy session?
Therapy is one hour a week, which is usually the same day and
time each week.
In this hour the individual discusses their problems with the
therapist.
In time these problems will be explored in-depth to gain
understanding of ones thoughts and emotions.
You are encouraged to talk about what ever you are thinking or
feeling. This is especially important when it comes to issues
relating directly to the therapy.
There are no magic cures in therapy. It takes time and effort.
A therapist does not have the answers but can help you to find
them through understanding, empathy, respect, helping to
increase awareness and by being non-judgemental.
Therapy may last a few sessions or may continue for years; this
will depend on each individual's circumstances and how much they
want from therapy.
How does
it work?
The first stage of therapy is to create a place that will allow
you to feel safe and free from judgement. In this place you will
be understood, cared for and at times challenged.
Through this process you can learn to understand and care for
yourself better.
At times you may need to look to the past to understand what is
happening for you in the present. A therapist helps to make
sense of the past by drawing on their knowledge of
different theories. Through this process they can help you to
become aware of what is currently unconscious.
Often we repeat the same patterns when relating to others and
ourselves, therapy will help to bring awareness to these
patterns.
Awareness brings choice, you can choose to change!
How to
get started
The first step is to set up an initial meeting session.
In this session we will discuss your reasons for seeking therapy
and what you
want from it.
I will also ask for some general information about your health,
your life situation, family of origin and previous therapy (if
any).
If you have any other questions for me regarding the therapy
feel free to ask.
